The first time I played Mount Popa, in 1993, the course was in poor shape, with sub-tropical scrub growing rampant on the fairways and tee boxes made of concrete-hard dirt. The holes had rarely been moved from one point on the green to another, and as a result, due to regular rain and the footsteps of golfers, the area around the holes became a meter-diameter funnel, sort of like a drain to help balls reach the target.

In one sense, sacred forests fit my Cartesian, left-brained worldview – they act as watersheds, offer shelter for animals, are repositories for medicinal plants and, in an emergency and given the proper ceremonies, can provide timber to rebuild a village ravaged by fire.

But they are also places of magic. When I was a boy I believed in gardens filled with unicorns and spirits and goblins. I know these special places existed – I saw them in my picture books and in my mind’s eye.
